About the Work
There is evidence of numerous journeys and extended stays abroad by Hans Holbein the Younger: in 1515, he moved from Augsburg to Basel, and from 1526 to 1528, he resided in London. The painter subsequently returned to Basel before settling permanently in London from 1532 onwards. There, he quickly gained the favor of the English King Henry VIII, who appointed him court painter. In addition to members of the royal family, he painted portraits of numerous prominent figures of the era, such as the French ambassador to England.
