About the Work
The meaning of the ‘Woman with a Music Book, Viola da Gamba and Cat’ and the ‘Woman with a Mirror, Snake, Stag and Doe’ remains unclear to this day. They are thought to be personifications of complex concepts from the humanist worldview. Musica and Prudentia (Prudence) have been tentatively suggested; temperaments, planetary deities, virtues, the liberal arts and even Christian symbolism have been put forward as possible interpretations. The two paintings were probably part of a series.
